On the 50th day after Easter, Pentecost is the solemn celebration in which the Holy Spirit comes to us to lead and guide us. Acts 2:1-4: “When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” After this, the Apostles evangelized loudly and clearly, proclaiming the truths Jesus had taught them.
In receiving the Holy Spirit, which we initially received at Baptism, at Confirmation and again on Pentecost, we are given the seven fold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Counsel, Piety, Understanding, Wisdom, Knowledge, Fear of the Lord and Fortitude. These are truly gifts given to each of us in different ways, to be used in our best way possible to live out our faith, inspiring others to do the same.
A short prayer to the Holy Spirit daily asking for help in our work, our challenges, our personal relationships and with those whose paths we cross that day is a perfect way to start our day. Often, when I know I have a difficult conversation coming up or one I should be having but may have put off, I ask the Holy Spirit to guide my thoughts and assist me to find the right words to say that will serve good purpose. Life is not easy, and I deeply understand that I need all the help and guidance I can receive to keep my path straight.
May the blessings and gifts of the Holy Spirit remain with you always.
